History 101: Contact Lenses
[vc_column_text]History 101 : Ever wondered how contact lenses came about? Leonardo Da Vinci created a glass lens with a funnel on one side so that water could be poured into it. He believed that submerging the head in a bowl of water could alter vision. Amazingly enough, this was the first ever conceptualization of contact lenses. In case you were wondering, this is the reason they’re called “contact” lenses – Because they make direct contact with the surface of the eye.
In 1960, Bausch & Lomb refined the technique of casting hydrogel, which produced consistent lens surfaces and a process for mass production. Then in 1998, Ciba Vision introduced silicone hydrogel contact lenses that featured extremely high oxygen permeability.
Today’s best contact lenses are breathable, durable, and comfortable, and scientists continue the quest for new lens improvements. Even giants like Samsung, Sony and Google are venturing into the contact lens market. This simply shows that contact lenses, traditionally known to only aid in vision, is using the technology we have today to do so much more.
With that said, it’s always good to know “our roots”! et’s go through a rough timeline…
