What to know about Contact Lenses?

As compared to the past, there are so many brands, types and models of contact lenses to choose from now. It is definitely not easy to decide on one if you are new to contact lenses and contact lenses are subjective since no two eyes are the same.

The easiest way to resolve this problem, is to go to your optometrist for an eye examination to find out your prescription, the type of contact lenses which suit you and the fitting of contact lenses because if contact lenses don’t fit properly (too tight or too loose) they can scratch the cornea, which can cause serious vision problem or even blindness.

It is recommended to return to your optometrist after the first fitting to check if there is contact lens related problems, for example, eye irritation or dry eyes.

If soft disposable contact lenses suit you, these are what ContactLens.SG has to offer.Below are some important readings which you will need to know before purchasing any lenses.

  • SPH – Sphere (referred to as Power/PWR, degree of your eye)
  • BC – Base Curve (usually between 8 and 10, this determines the fitting of the lens)
  • DIA – Diameter (usually between 13 and 15, lens’ width)

If you have astigmatism, there’ll be two more readings when you purchase Toric lenses.

  • CYL – Cylinder (usually between -4.00 and +4.00, measurement for astigmatism)
  • AX – Axis (usually between 0 and 180)

Soft disposable contact lenses basically mean that the lenses can only be worn once and then discarded after the specified period of usage. They are available in the following usage terms.

  • Daily – Generally the most expensive but the most convenient as there’s no need for soaking and cleaning since they are sterile in the packages and you’ll begin with a new pair every day. Daily disposables are softer as compared to other extended wear contact lenses, hence it is very comfortable but this also means that it is easier to tear so daily disposables should not be reused.
  • Bi-weekly/Tri-monthly/Monthly – These disposable lenses usually require simple cleaning and proper disinfection before keeping them again for the next day. They are stronger and more durable since they are meant to last longer. However, this might cause some discomfort for some people.

To highlight one more time, contact lenses are really subjective. What suits one might not necessary suits another so you have to find out for yourself (better to do so with some professional help).
